Safe Routes to School Student Travel Tally

About 32% of our K-5 students are walking or biking to school! 

To better support students in walking and biking to school and track annual progress, we work with Seattle Public Schools to conduct an annual travel tally in all elementary and K-8 schools during the first week of June.   

In June 2026, we had 55 elementary schools surveying students on how they get to and from school recording a walk, bike, and roll rate of 32% with over 1/2 our students getting to school in a way other rather driving alone. 

2026 Mode choice for K-5 students

This chart shows the percentage of people using different modes of transportation:

• • Car: 46% of people use a car.
  • Walk: 26% of people walk.
  • School Bus: 18% of people use a school bus.
  • Carpool: 3% of people carpool.
  • Bike: 6% of people bike or scooter.
  • Transit: 1% of people use public transit.

K-5 students are walking and biking to school at a rate 17% higher than when the tally was first conducted in 2005.
