As our construction timeline has changed to begin work in March 2026 (rather than Fall 2025), we will

We will hold a more public meeting on a date to be determined later.

Thank you for your patience and support while we improve the roadway to better serve our community and transit system.

The Southwest Barton Street Layover Repaving project is a collaboration between the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and King County Metro. Currently, the concrete road surface on SW Barton Street is full of large cracks and buckling in several areas. This buckling and cracking occurs due to the weight of the buses. When soil underneath the road settles in place, a sinking effect happens, which leads to louder, bumpier rides. Bus layover zones – areas on the side of the road where buses sit idle when not in use - are particularly prone to this kind of damage. Crews must continually add asphalt to SW Barton St's Road surface.

This project addresses these concerns by replacing the underlying soil with lightweight cellular concrete and repaving the road using concrete pavement designed to take bus loads. Taking these measures to repave the road will:

  • Reduce maintenance costs for keeping SW Barton St in good repair
  • Lower maintenance costs for buses
  • Make for smoother driving

When are we beginning this project?

Construction expected to begin: March 2026

How will you be impacted?

If you are taking transit

During the repaving period, there will be disruptions to regular transit routes and layover operations. We are working with Metro to decide where in the neighborhood is the best place to move bus stops and the layover area. Please know that we are committed to minimizing any inconvenience and will provide up-to-date information on alternative arrangements. You can find the detour routes and bus stop & layover relocations below, in our Materials section.
