1st Ave S Sidewalks
Safe Streets for All Improvements
Updated: May 2026
What's Happening Now?
This project is currently in the early design phase. We are beginning to reach out to businesses in the project area to learn more about freight access and business needs. Your feedback will help inform the project as we move further into the design phase.
Project Overview
We’re improving safety, accessibility, and mobility along 1st Ave S by building new sidewalks and upgrading curb ramps in two segments:
- S Spokane St to S Andover St
- S Alaska St to E Marginal Way S
These improvements will close long-standing gaps in the sidewalk network and help create a more comfortable and predictable environment for everyone traveling through this busy corridor.
Why This Project Matters
1st Ave S serves many people—workers, truck drivers, and people walking, rolling, and biking. Over time, missing sidewalks and outdated curb ramps have created safety challenges and limited travel options. This project aims to:
- Provide safer, ADA-accessible routes for people walking and rolling
- Strengthen connections between major streets and neighborhood destinations
- Maintain essential access to local businesses and industrial operations
What We're Building
- New sidewalks in areas where no sidewalks currently exist
- Upgraded ADA-compliant curb ramps to improve accessibility
- Drainage improvements where needed
Project Benefits
This project will make travel along 1st Ave S safer and more predictable for all users. It will improve how people and goods move and close key gaps in the sidewalk network. Together, these upgrades will help create a more connected and accessible South Seattle.

Program
The 1st Ave S Sidewalks Improvements Project is part of the Safe Streets for All Program. This program includes building neighborhood-scale safety upgrades at over 80 locations by 2030. These Safe Streets for All projects will provide safer options for you to walk, bike, roll, or get to transit as well as improving mobility for people with disabilities. Building these projects supports our Vision Zero goal to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030.
Schedule
- Early 2026: We are assessing existing conditions and evaluating early design alternatives. We will also engage with people who work and travel in the area to understand their priorities as we address gaps in the sidewalk network.
- Mid-2026 to 2027: We will continue to refine design alternatives with technical input from the team and feedback from the community.
- Late 2027-2029: We will move into construction and keep the community informed with regular updates about the schedule, progress, and expected impacts.
Project schedule is subject to change.
Funding
This project is funded in part through the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safe Streets and Roads (SS4A) for All Grant Program. SS4A provides funding to support local initiatives that improve road safety and help prevent deaths and serious injuries for all people using our streets, including people walking, biking, rolling, taking transit, and driving.
