Safe Routes to School: Wing Luke Elementary

Updated March 25, 2024

What's Happening Now?

Major work for the Kenyon Way S Sidewalk project is complete! We are finishing a few small tasks and you may see crews and/or equipment in the area.

We are excited to announce that we are starting construction on an extension of the Wing Luke Elementary Neighborhood Greenway northward as soon as spring 2024! (See the new project map below.) We will be installing the Neighborhood Greenway in stages, starting this spring and finishing in 2024.

Improvements will occur at the following locations 1) S Holly Park Dr from S Myrtle Pl to 40th Ave S, 2) 39th Ave S from S Holly Park Dr to S Kenyon St, 3) 40th Ave S between S Holly Park Dr and S Holden St, and 4) S Holden St between 40th Ave S and 39th Ave S.

Project Overview

The Neighborhood Greenway extension has been planned in coordination with the earlier project already funded through the Safe Routes to School and Urban Trails and Bikeways programs and will further enhance safe travel to Wing Luke Elementary for children and families and make it easier to walk and bike in the neighborhood. Safe Routes to School is a national movement to make it easier and safer for students to walk and bike to school.

Current Work

The New Neighborhood Greenway routing will include the following street improvements:

  • Speed humps or cushions to calm traffic
  • Upgrades at the intersection of S Myrtle Pl and S Holly Park Dr including a bike crosswalk, turning boxes, and other bike facilities
  • Stop signs with stop bars on side streets intersecting the Neighborhood Greenway
  • Tree trimming and sidewalk smoothing
  • Wayfinding signs and markings

  • a new connection to Chief Sealth Trail
