Updated August 2026
We need regular investment to keep our transportation system safe and reliable. This is especially true as older assets wear down and need to be fixed or replaced.
During the outreach for the 2024 Transportation Levy, people across the city told us they want more investment in sidewalks, roads, and bridges. Voters approved the eight-year, $1.55 billion levy to help pay for new projects and the daily care of our streets and bridges.
Even with this funding, the total cost to maintain and improve our system is higher than the money we have available. Because a levy expires, planning for long-term maintenance can be difficult.
Exploring Long-Term Funding Solutions
The Transportation Levy includes a promise to look for solutions to these funding challenges. The City Council directed the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) to form a Transportation Funding Task Force. This group will explore more stable ways to fund our transportation system and policy strategies in the future.
The Task Force will focus on the following goals:
- The Task Force will review the policy and funding tools the City can legally use.
- Members will assess which tools are realistic to put into practice.
- The group will consider how different scenarios could improve the condition of our assets, with a focus on sidewalks, paving, and bridges.
- The Task Force will share their final recommendations with the Mayor and City Council.
Current Status and Timeline
The Task Force is in the process of being formally appointed. City Council confirmation is underway, and the group will begin meeting later this year.
