Funding
Updated: July 28, 2023
Seattle is one of the fastest-growing large cities in the country. We work to make sure our transportation system can meet this growing demand. We build streets, maintain infrastructure, and keep people and goods moving. We do this in a way that prioritizes safety, equity, mobility, sustainability, livability, and excellence.
About Our Budget
SDOT has a total budget of over $700 million. The operating budget pays for day-to-day services and maintenance work, and the capital budget is used for one-time infrastructure and improvements.

The Work Our Budget Funds
Beyond filling potholes and helping buses and freight deliveries run on time, we also pave streets, adjust traffic signals, create enjoyable public spaces, and build a network of bike lanes and sidewalks to serve people of all ages and abilities. Learn more about our projects and programs.
Where Our Funding Comes From
Our funding comes from a range of sources, including taxes, fees and charges for services, the City’s general fund, the Levy to Move Seattle, grants, and bonds.
Below you can find more information about some of these important funding sources.
- The Levy to Move Seattle: Around 30% of the City’s transportation budget comes from the Levy to Move Seattle, which is a 9-year transportation Levy approved by Seattle voters in 2015. The Levy replaces the 9-Year Bridging the Gap levy that was approved by voters in 2006.
