12th Avenue S Safety Project - Phase 1
August 2021
The 12th Ave S Vision Zero project is complete! We want to thank community members and neighbors for your continued support as we make safety enhancements in the neighborhood. For more information about our current 12th Ave Corridor Safety projects, please click here.
Project Overview
12th Ave S is a key walking, biking, and transit corridor connecting Little Saigon, Yesler Terrace, and Beacon Hill. As the area grows, SDOT worked with community members to improve safety and access for everyone using the street.
Between 2004 and 2017, more than 40 collisions involving people walking and biking were reported between S Weller St and S Charles St, highlighting the need for safety improvements.
With community input, we delivered upgrades such as traffic calming, signal changes, and new pedestrian and bicycle safety features. See the project map below for details.
Although the Bicycle Master Plan recommends a protected bike lane from E Yesler Way to S Charles St, this project focused on the segment from S King St to S Charles St. SDOT is continuing to study future options to complete an all‑ages‑and‑abilities bike connection north of S King St.

Project Details
This project included:
- Safety upgrades for people walking and biking at S King, S Weller St and S Charles St
- Speed reduction measures on 12th Ave S near the Dr. José Rizal Bridge
- Improved walking and bicycle connections along and across 12th Ave S
During early planning, we reviewed traffic data and safety data, gathered community feedback, and considered SDOT's plans for walking, biking, transit and freight.
The final design reflects what we heard from the community and broader public. It includes:
- A protected northbound left turn signal at 12th Ave S and S Weller St
- Shared raised protected bike lane and bus stop where southbound buses remain in travel lane at 12th Ave S just south of Weller St
- Directional protected bike lanes on 12th Ave S.
