N 130TH St Vision Zero Safety Corridor

Updated May 2, 2025

What's Happening Now?

We completed installation of the new street design in late April. We'll monitor traffic operations and make adjustments to signal timing as needed. We'll also install new signal detectors to help signal operations at Ashworth Ave N and Stone Ave N the week of May 5.

Project overview

We made safety and accessibility improvements on N 130th St between 1st Ave NE and Stone Ave N as a part of our Vision Zero commitment to ending traffic deaths and serious injuries so everyone safely arrives at their destinations. N 130th St between Aurora Ave N and I-5 is a high collision area with a history of serious injuries for people walking and biking. The new street design reduces conflicts between people driving and people walking, biking, and scooting, and makes it easier for people driving to safely make left turns using the center turn lane. It will also help calm traffic and reduce speeding.

Address immediate pavement quality and mobility issues

In 2024, we paved the street to preserve and extend the life of the street until a full street reconstruction and drainage improvements can be done by the N 130th St – Bitter Lake to Haller Lake Mobility Improvements project.

We also installed accessible curb ramps (compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act) in 2024 to make it safer and easier for people walking and rolling to travel through the area.

Install a new street design to improve safety

In 2025, we redesigned the street improve safety, calm traffic, create connections to Sound Transit’s Pinehurst Station (opening 2026), and support King County Metro's upcoming Route 77. Project improvements included:

  • Reducing the speed limit on N 130th St from 30 mph to 25 mph to improve safety for all users
  • Redesigning the street from 4 lanes to 3 lanes with 1 vehicle lane in each direction and a center turn lane to improve safety
  • Installing protected bike lanes on both sides of the street to improve safety and connections for people on bikes and scooters. The bike lanes also provide an additional buffer between the street and the sidewalk to create a more comfortable walking and rolling space.
  • Adding protected left turns at Meridian Ave N, Ashworth Ave N, and Stone Ave N to improve turning operations and safety through these intersections
  • Adding ‘No Turn On Red’ restrictions at 1st Ave NE, Meridian Ave N, Ashworth Ave N, and Stone Ave N to improve pedestrian, bicycle and overall operational safety
