Renton Ave S Protected Bike Lane
February 2026
What’s happening now?
As part of our Vision Zero program, we’re making some changes to Renton Ave S between 55th Ave S and MLK Jr Way S. We want to reduce speeding and crashes, and provide safety improvements for people walking, biking, and rolling.
Project Overview
Renton Ave S provides important north-south access connecting various neighborhoods and amenities in South Seattle. Our Vision Zero Program has identified Renton Ave S between 55th Ave S and MLK Jr S as a priority and our goal is to reduce speeding and crashes on this corridor.
We will apply Vision Zero Safe System Approach measures including enhanced pedestrian crossings, protected bicycle lanes, and other traffic calming elements in this project design. These improvements aim to reduce speeding and make it easier and more comfortable for people walking, biking, and rolling on Renton Ave S to visit local businesses, resource centers, and amenities such as the Rainier Beach light rail station, Kubota Gardens, community gathering spaces and other amenities. Several schools and public services are also close to this busy street, including Dunlap Elementary, South Shore PK-8, Emerson Elementary, and Seattle Fire Station 33.

Project Description
This project includes:
- Installing new enhanced crosswalks at select locations
- Paint lines to clearly define parking and loading areas
- Upgrading the existing bike lane to a protected bike lane. Move the existing bike lane to the curb and provide buffer space between the bike lane and the vehicle travel lane.
- Install bike barriers in the buffer space between the bike lane and vehicle travel lane, including:
- Concrete curbs
- Concrete traffic barriers
- Loading zones and parking spaces
- Add intersection improvements such as daylighting and bicycle crossing markings
How will this project impact parking?
Along most of this corridor, we will be moving on-street parking from the curbside to between the bicycle lane and the general travel. Additionally, street parking will be removed between S Trenton Streed and S Fletcher Street. These changes will allow us to provide protected bicycle lanes and aim to reduce speeding along the corridor. To achieve these safety goals, there will be fewer on-street parking spaces along the project extents. As part of this project, we conducted a parking study to show how many vehicles are using the on-street parking throughout the corridor as well as on immediate side streets. This data allowed us to confirm that for most blocks along Renton Ave S, there will still be enough parking spaces for the number of cars that park on those blocks today. Additionally, for the handful of blocks with high occupancy today, we were able to confirm that the immediate side streets have capacity for on-street parking overflow from Renton Ave S.
