NE 65th Street Pedestrian Safety Enhancements

Updated: March 22, 2022

 This project is complete!

The proposed designs on NE 65th St between Brooklyn Ave NE and 14th Ave NE, and signage improvements on 28th Ave NE and NE 65th is complete and operational! Thank you to all who participated in the community prioritization process for this Neighborhood Street Fund project!

Project Overview

This is one of 15 Neighborhood Street Fund (NSF) projects requested by neighbors and selected by the Levy to Move Seattle Oversight Committee. Neighborhood Street Fund is a city program, running on 3-year cycles, that enables neighbors to propose and help prioritize transportation-related projects that are then built by the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT).

This project builds off of the safety and traffic improvements completed under the NE 65t Street Vision Zero Project in spring 2019. The original NSF project included crossing improvements at 4 intersections: Brookyln Ave NE, 14th Ave NE, 21st Ave NE, and 28th Ave NE. After further review, we will implement improvements at 3 locations: Brooklyn Ave NE, 14th Ave NE, and 28th Ave NE. The Northgate and Roosevelt Link light rails stations will open in 2021. These crossing locations will support access to these new and existing transit connections along NE 65th St.

Elements

  • Flashing beacons and marked crosswalks at Brooklyn Ave NE, 14th Ave NE, and 28th Ave NE

Benefits

  • Provides a safer, more comfortable, and more accessible route for walking and rolling across NE 65th St for students and pedestrians
  • Improve crossing awareness and expectation for drivers.
  • Meet current and future demands for future development at crossing locations
  • Encourages slower vehicle speeds near commercial, residential, and high pedestrian usage streets
  • Increases convenience by minimizing out-of-direction travel
  • Connects people walking or rolling to transit, businesses, and community destinations

Project Background

NE 65th St is an arterial that moves people and goods throughout northeast Seattle. The street supports a diverse collection of retail shopping, restaurants, schools, parks, and activity centers. This area will also be the future home for The Roosevelt Link Light Rail station, which will bring additional activity to the street in 2021.

The project, located at NE 65th St and Brooklyn Ave NE / 14th Ave NE / 28th Ave NE are currently unmarked crosswalks. These areas experience many pedestrian crossings, from high school students walking to and from school and users accessing bus stops, parks, and businesses on the opposite side of the street. The crossing demand is anticipated to increase with continued development of the Roosevelt neighborhood.

Note: funds not used for this project will be returned to the NSF program budget.
