STREETS | Summit Ave between Madison St and Spring St

Walkway Improvements

Project Overview

The sidewalk on Summit Ave, between Madison St and Spring St, has been damaged over time, and the sidewalk is uplifted from tree roots. Sidewalk repair increases accessibility, safety, and creates a more comfortable experience for travelers.

If additional funds are available following implementation, we will expand our work to include sidewalks along Spring St, adjacent to Summit Ave.

Project Solutions

  • Repair the existing sidewalk
  • Prune overgrown tree roots

Neighborhood: First Hill

Total Cost: $90,000
YVYC Funds: $90,000

Project Schedule and Updates

Construction was completed in March 2022.

STREETS | 14th Ave E and E Aloha St

Crossing Improvements

Project Overview

Many people use the intersection of 14th Ave E and E Aloha St to reach destinations in Capitol Hill such as Volunteer Park, Lowell Elementary School, businesses along 15th Ave E and more.

It has been reported as a challenging crossing for pedestrians. Installing a curb bulb and new streetlight decreases crossing distance, make pedestrians more visible, and calm the flow of traffic.

In response to the pandemic, SDOT developed Stay Healthy Streets, and 14th AVe E is being conisdered as a possible future route. As a result, the YVYC project scope has been revised to install an all-way stop at the interesection and marking the crosswalks for the east and west crossings across E Aloha St.

Project Solutions (2018)

  • Mark a crosswalk on the west crossing across E Aloha St
  • Install a rectangular rapid flashing beacon

Project Solutions (2021 Revision)

  • Mark a crosswalk on the east and west crossings across E Aloha St
  • Install an all-way stop control at the intersection

Neighborhood: Capitol Hill

Total Cost: $83,298
YVYC Funds: $83,298

Project Schedule and Updates

Construction was completed in October 2021.

STREETS | 19th Ave and E Cherry St

Crossing Improvements

Project Overview

The 19th Ave and E Cherry St intersection has poor visibility due to its location on a hill, and it provides an unmarked crossing for people walking and biking to the city.

Installing hatched barrier striping on E Cherry St, parallel to the curb, on the east and west approaches on both the north and south side of E Cherry St, enhances pedestrian visibility and predictability by creating a buffer near the unmarked crossings.

Project Solutions

  • Install hatched barrier striping

Neighborhood: Squire Park

Total Cost: $10,000
YVYC Funds: $10,000

Project Schedule and Updates

Construction was completed in June 2019.

STREETS | 16th Ave, 17th Ave, and 18th Ave and E Jefferson St

Project Overview

Multiple intersections along E Jefferson St connect residents to Seattle University, Swedish Cherry Hill, a growing business district, and residential neighborhoods. Installing crossing upgrades at these intersections enhances accessibility, safety, and predictability for all travelers, and supports plans for a future Neighborhood Greenway (NGW), and Swedish Hospitals future expansion project.

Project Solutions

  • Install double facing “Pedestrian Crossing” warning signs

Neighborhood: Squire Park

Total Cost: $5,000
YVYC Funds: $5,000

STREETS | 29th Ave between E Yesler Way and E Alder St

Traffic Calming Upgrades

Project Overview

29th Ave is a residential street located near Leschi Elementary School, Peppi’s Park, and Barnett Park. We’ve heard from neighbors that the stretch between E Yesler Way and E Alder St is often used as a cut-through route during peak traffic. Installing speed humps calms drivers and improves safety for all travelers.

Project Solutions

  • Install speed humps along 29th Ave, locations to be determined

Neighborhood: Leschi

Total Cost: $16,100
YVYC Funds: $16,100

Project Schedule and Updates

Construction was completed in August 2019.

STREETS | I-90 Offramp onto Rainier Ave S

Upgraded Walkway

The path is on Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) property, and is Parks & Recreation’s responsibility to maintain. Pending agreements with WSDOT and Parks & Recreation, we’ll pave the existing path to improve accessibility and connectivity for pedestrians.

Project Solutions

  • Pave the existing path at the north end of Valentine Pl S – pending WSDOT and Parks agreements

Neighborhood: Atlantic

Total Cost: $56,800
YVYC Funds: $56,800

PARKS | Judkins Park

Trail Improvements

Project Overview

Judkins is a multipurpose park corridor in the Central Area. Its six-block strip of green enlivens the Rainier Valley with picnic, play and sports areas with wide grass fields, a skatepark, spray park, and picnic tables. Some areas of the skatepark have fallen into disrepair and some trees would shade an area popular for watching the skateboard fun.

Upgrading the skatepark area system improves the experience for skaters and observers alike.

Project Solutions

  • Repair and replace pavers that line the grass in the middle and others around the outside of the skate area
  • Add trees to southwest corner

Neighborhood: Judkins Park

Total Cost: $24,700
YVYC Funds: $24,700

Project Schedule and Updates

Construction was completed in 2020.

Please check Seattle Parks and Recreation for the latest updates.
