Denny-Stewart-Yale Safety Enhancements

We completed phase one of the intersection safety enhancements in October of 2020, which included new traffic channelization, signage, crosswalks, and improved signals and phasing.
Phase two will be completed in coordination with an adjacent private development project and will include improvements to the bus stop island, pedestrian crossing, and wayfinding.
Project Overview
In 2019, the Denny/Stewart/Yale Safety Enhancements project was one of 15 projects selected by the Levy to Move Seattle Oversight Committee to be funded through SDOT's Neighborhood Street Fund (NSF) Program. The project, located at the intersection of Denny Way, Yale Avenue and Stewart Street, aims to enhance safety at this complex intersection through improved lighting, crossing treatments including new ramps, and updated signs and markings.
Elements
The concept funded by the Levy to Move Seattle through the Neighborhood Street Fund program includes additional lighting, signage, and new traffic calming channelization such as bollards, hardened centerlines, and signal phasing to improve safe, legible access to I-5 and downtown. Pedestrian safety enhancements include new crosswalks, shorter crossing distances, larger pedestrian waiting areas, and additional pedestrian crossing signals that allow more time for crossing to access the triangular traffic island bus stop.
Benefits
The improved intersection design allows the large number of pedestrians and vehicles that pass through this intersection every day to more predictably navigate the complex lane and access options and safely reach their destinations.

Schedule
The NSF program runs on 3-year cycles to select, design, and build projects. The application phase for the 2019-2021 cycle opened October 2018 and projects will be constructed in 2021.

Project Background
This is one of 15 Neighborhood Street Fund projects requested by neighbors and selected by the Levy to Move Seattle Oversight Committee. Neighborhood Street Fund is a city program, running on 3-year cycles, that enables neighbors to propose and help prioritize transportation-related projects that are then built by the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT).
NOTE: Funds not used for this project will be returned to the NSF program budget.
