Genesee Playfield - Play Area Renovation and Public Restroom Replacement
Updated: July 2, 2024
Summer 2024
This project will renovate the play area equipment and replace the existing restroom structure to meet current safety and accessibility standards. The project was initiated due to a failed restroom structure and plumbing system, and the play area condition. We will be hosting a community engagement event in early August 2024.
This is a complex project as the facility is built over a landfill, storm drainage and sewer lines. The team is currently developing a schematic plan (will include layout and building/play area design, cost estimate and updated schedule), preparing the next community engagement program, and preparing permitting documentation. Seattle Parks and Recreation will maintain portable toilets until the new restroom is completed.
Thank you to the over 120 people who participated in our survey in September 2020. We heard climbing, swing and nature play are important to your community. Additionally, many people commented on the restrooms being too dark.
Location
Genesee Park and Playfield, 4316 S Genesee Street, 98118
Budget
The current budget includes $3,061,000 in funding for planning, design and construction.
Schedule
Planning & Design: Restroom Station & Play Area Renovation - Schematic Design - 30%
Construction: 2025
Project Description
The project will renovate the play area equipment and replace the existing restroom structure to meet current safety and accessibility standards. This will likely include individually accessed, all-gender toilet facilities, and new play equipment that is accessible to children of all abilities. In addition, the project will make other site accessibility improvements that meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
During construction, the contractor will need to close this portion of the park. Seattle Parks and Recreation and the contractor hired for the project will work to minimize the impact on the neighborhood.
