Jefferson Park, the sixth largest park in the city, offers unparalleled views of the Duwamish River, the city and the Olympic Mountains. The Olmsted inspired path system flanked by trees offers a wonderful respite from city life along with many active opportunities. The covering of the reservoirs and two voter-approved Park levies transformed the park into a great community gathering place for southeast Seattle. It is the home to the Jefferson Park Golf Course, the Jefferson Community Center, Jefferson Lawn Bowling, Jefferson Skatepark and Beacon Mountain.

Jefferson Park Playfield Synthetic Turf Replacement Project
Summer 2023 Update
The project was successfully advertised, and the construction contract was awarded to Hellas Construction. They have mobilized onsite and anticipate completing the turf replacement by the end of September 2023.
Spring 2023 Update
Seattle Parks and Recreation conducted condition assessments on all our synthetic turf fields in 2018, which informed both immediate maintenance needs and the order in which field projects are funded for replacement. Seattle Parks and Recreation continues to lead the way in developing and installing alternate synthetic turf field design materials to deliver a safe, durable, and playable athletic facility and experience.
This project will replace 153,500 sq ft of aging synthetic turf at Jefferson Playfield. This will include the removal of the old ‘worn out’ synthetic turf and address any structural repairs to curbing, subsurface drainage, and the rubberized running track. Additionally, a design study is being conducted for constructing accessible parking stalls and an accessible route to the playfield. Implementation of these accessibility improvements will be on a separate project timeline from the turf replacement project due to additional permitting requirements.
Budget
The budget for the planning, design, and construction of the synthetic turf replacement is $2.8 million.
Schedule
Bidding: Spring 2023
Construction: Late July - Late September 2023
Anticipated Impact
During construction, the playfield will need to be closed. Seattle Parks and Recreation and the contractor hired will work to minimize impacts to park visitors and the community. For additional information please contact Jonathan Pagan at: Jonathan.Pagan@seattle.gov
