Japanese Garden closures
Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Arboretum Foundation temporarily closed the Seattle Japanese Garden this summer to complete a major restoration project. Most of the Garden reopened on July 28, 2026.
- North Section Closure: Through November 2026 during wall construction and landscape restoration
- Regular Seasonal Closure: December through February for winter maintenance

Located within the Washington Park Arboretum, this is a 3 1/2 acre formal garden designed and constructed under the supervision of world-renowned Japanese garden designer Juki Iida in 1960. Visit the Japanese Garden website for a complete list of hours, admissions, and more.
(The Garden closes each winter for maintenance.)
Current Projects:
- Japanese Garden Wall and Pavillion Replacement
- Washington Park Arboretum Creek Water Quality Enhancement
- Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) has determined that the project does not have a probable significant adverse impact on the environment. An environmental impact statement (EIS) is not required under RCW 43.21C.030(2)(c). This decision was made after review of a completed environmental checklist and other information on file with SPR. This information is available to the public on request.
- The Determination of Non-Significance (DNS) was issued September 10, 2026. Written comments must be submitted by September 24, 2026.
