Washington Park Playfield Playground Installation

Updated: August 6, 2019

Thank you, Seattle! This project is complete.

Project Timeline

Fall 2018
After many months our benches and picnic table have arrived and installation is underway as of September 11. We will follow with topsoil and hydroseed to get better grass around the perimeter come spring.

The play area is now open!
The weather has calmed and the decaying maple tree was removed. Seattle Parks and Recreation and the contractor will be finishing up final detail work over the next couple weeks.
Check out the completed play equipment photos.

The new play area was inspected on November 7 and the equipment was given an OK from Parks Playground Crew. At that time Parks Tree Crew reviewed an adjacent maple tree and found aggressive decay at the base of the tree and delayed the play area opening until the tree's removal. Before the tree crew could complete removal, weather conditions diverted their services to emergent needs at other parks. The crew will return to remove this tree as soon as possible. When we have the play area safe to use we will open it. We thank you for your patience with this unexpected delay.

Equipment installation is nearly complete and the contractor has placed the rubber safety surfacing around the bases of the new play structures.

Due to our unique site, this is a custom installation and a few of the parts need to be reconfigured by the factory to make everything work. The pieces have arrived in Seattle and we expect to have all the work complete by Tuesday November 7.

This project was selected for the second round of Parks and Green Spaces Levy Opportunity Funding. The application received in this community-initiated process is a preliminary concept and the final design may be constrained by the project budget. All projects will go through Park's public involvement procedure which includes public meetings and community input. They will also go through an internal Parks process to ensure the most effective implementation.

This Development project will install a full playground at Washington Park Playfield. Include play structures for young and older children, seating for all ages and other elements for play.

Project Timeline

August 2017

Work is underway on the play area, the old swing set has been removed and the locations of the new equipment have been set. The underlying material has been compacted and we plan to install the concrete foundations for the new equipment the week of August 21. We will then build a concrete curb around the new play area and install new sidewalk to connect the restroom building to the play area.

July 2017

Construction will begin on the new play area Monday July 24. The recent good weather has dried the site out and we look forward to delivering this play area. The swings will be removed on Monday and we expect the work to take a little over two months.

May 2017

Parks will begin laying out the new play area next week, the team has been ready to go since the beginning of April but weather has not been cooperating. Signs will be posted prior to the actual construction start.

January 2017

The purchase of the new play equipment was delayed until late 2016.  Parks did not want to remove the swings until we had something ready to replace them.  Equipment has been delivered and Parks will move forward with the project in spring 2017 as soon as we can begin work.

Summer 2016

The Permitting from the State Department of Historic Preservation will be completed by the end of June. Seattle Parks and Recreation is ordering equipment and preparing for construction in July.

January 2016

Thank you to everyone who attended the Open House on December 12, 2015. We appreciated all the input you provided and are excited to move forward with the design.
