The Master Composter/Sustainability Steward (MC/SS) volunteer program is a key effort in Seattle’s waste reduction and recycling efforts; it is a collaborative program between Seattle Public Utilities and Tilth Alliance.

Open to all Seattle residents, MC/SS volunteers learn how to:

  • Help their community reduce, reuse, and recycle
  • Build worm bins
  • Recycle food and yard waste at their homes or community gardens
  • Build healthy urban soils
  • Support thriving landscapes throughout the city

In exchange for this training, MC/SS volunteers provide outreach and education about what they learned to fellow residents.
