Green Lake Small Craft Center Redevelopment

Join us for the Ribbon Cutting celebration for the new Green Lake Community Boathouse! Saturday, April 13, from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
The new 10,800 SF boathouse will increase capacity for programs through a combination of expanded and more efficient boat storage and additional instructional space. It will be fully accessible, which makes possible the launch of Seattle’s first public adaptive rowing program and the expansion of a paracanoing program. Specialized programs of Seattle Parks and Recreation will also be able to expand their work with individuals of differing physical and cognitive abilities.
Additionally, the new facility will provide restrooms, locker facilities, and areas for off-water instruction and a community meeting space. The new boathouse will better engage with Green Lake Park and the heavily used adjacent walking trail. The project includes excavation, site re-grading and utility work to support the new building. The adjacent Massart Shellhouse building and restrooms will be minimally renovated as well and utilities for both buildings will be repaired/replaced.

Advanced work to install new water lines across the adjacent Pitch N Putt golf course has already been completed.

Budget
This project estimate is $12,500,000 and is being funded in part by private donations and grants from the Land & Water Conservation Fund, Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program, King County, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Major Projects Challenge Fund.

Project Description
There have long been conversations among the rowing and sailing community that the Small Craft Center (SCC) needs improvement and/or expansion to better serve existing and potential future users. Damage to the SCC from the Nisqually earthquake in 2001 was repaired but no improvements were made to the facility. In 2017, with funding from the Major Projects Challenge Fund and in partnership with the Rowing Advisory Council, Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) hired Schact Aslani Architects to undertake a pre-design feasibility study to look at options for improving the SCC. In 2017, with funding from the Major Projects Challenge Fund and in partnership with the Rowing Advisory Council, Seattle Parks and Recreation hired Schact Aslani Architects to undertake a pre-design feasibility study to look at options for improving the Small Craft Center.
The study is complete and the project is currently funded through the first phase of design. The Rowing Advisory Council is actively seeking additional funding for the subsequent design phases and construction from the Seattle Park District Major Projects Challenge Fund, State grants and private fundraising.
