Project Description

Seattle City Light is piloting a program to improve customer safety, reduce carbon emissions and conserve resources by testing LED streetlight fixtures in the Windermere neighborhood. The new fixtures will be evaluated for appearance, historical integrity and light levels. City Light is testing five fixtures within the Windermere neighborhood.

Location

The pilot streetlights are located with Seattle's Windermere neighborhood.

What's Happening Now?

Project Update (2022): This project has been completed and the existing lights have been replaced with a new replica style and 2700-degree Kelvin LED.

Community Benefits

  • The streetlights in the Windermere neighborhood are aging and due for replacement. The pilot program provides an opportunity for community feedback that may affect which fixture will be chosen.
  • The new fixtures will improve the quality of lighting, pedestrian and traffic safety.
  • LEDs reduce greenhouse gas emissions during manufacturing as well as when they are in use. Additionally, about 20,000 tons of reduced carbon emissions per year are the result of fewer service vehicle trips.

Anticipated Impacts

  • Customers can expect some traffic impacts during the removal of existing streetlight fixtures and the installation of new LED fixtures. Parking may be impacted within the immediate area.
  • The survey results will be presented to the Windermere Community Board at a future neighborhood meeting in November or December 2020. Meeting details will be shared by the board.
  • The new streetlight fixtures are scheduled for installation in late 2021. This is subject to change.

Feedback will be collected in the 4th quarter of 2020. Construction is tentative to begin in late 2021.
