Like many utilities, City Light produces and delivers electricity to our customers' homes and businesses. However, in 2005 we became the first electric utility in the country to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions. We have maintained that status every year since.

Over 80% of the power we deliver is generated from our own portfolio of hydroelectric projects and a regional network of clean, renewable hydroelectricity. Our long history of exceeding minimum compliance standards and environmental stewardship includes ongoing measures designed to protect fish, plants, animals and other natural, cultural, and historic resources.

Throughout the scope of our work and beyond, we strive to minimize impacts to the environment and help restore species and habitat through a host of environmental stewardship actions.

We lead on climate action and decarbonization.

We are proud to lead on climate action at a local, regional and international level. As the first utility to be greenhouse gas neutral and one of the first to develop a comprehensive climate action plan, we are prioritizing a pollution-free, equitable, and sustainable future. This future relies on transitioning away from fossil fuels to electrify our buildings and transportation sectors.

Electric vehicles and the electrification of transportation is key to reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change. We're investing in public and private charging stations and working with partner agencies to electrify buses, ferries, and other modes of transportation to further reduce emissions and other air pollutants.

We strive to protect fish, wildlife, and natural habitats.

City Light understands how critical it is to protect fish and wildlife habitats for both our ecosystem and the long-term effects of climate change. That is why we administer programs that focus on the protection of fish, birds, and other wildlife species in the areas we operate and serve.

We are committed to high standards of environmental protection and adhere to a strict environmental policy based on the priorities of compliance, conservation, protection, prevention, improvement, and leadership.

We care for our natural urban forests and landscapes.

The urban forests in and around Seattle provide critical public health, infrastructure, and environmental benefits, as well as beautiful and inspiring landscapes.

We seek to balance these essential public services with the reliability of our electricity and the safety of our communities and crews through integrated vegetation management around our complex network of substations, transmission rights-of-ways, power lines and transformers.

We also use sustainable landscaping practices that preserve habitats for diverse species, increase water conservation, lower carbon emissions, and benefit the surrounding community.
