Chinatown-ID/Atlantic Infrastructure Upgrades

Map showing project work area on South Weller Street

Project Description

Seattle City Light plans to replace aging electrical infrastructure in the Atlantic and Chinatown-International District areas. The work will include replacing aging utility poles, overhead wire, and equipment to help upgrade the existing electrical system.

Location

Construction will occur in the Chinatown-ID/Atlantic areas

What's Happening Now?

Project Update (June 2021): Crews completed this work in early June 2021.

Community Benefits

  • The repairs will improve electrical reliability for this area and upgrade aging infrastructure.

Anticipated Impacts

  • Crews will begin replacing utility poles, overhead wires and equipment on South Weller Street (between Dearborn Place South and 18th Avenue South).
  • Crews will reduce traffic and parking impacts by working one area at a time. However, traffic will be restricted and "No Park" signs enforced in work zones. Crews will remove "No Park" signs once the work has been completed.
  • Some noise is expected from heavy machinery.
  • Once the electrical equipment is relocated, the new poles will be placed alongside the old poles. It may take several months before the communications companies make their wire transfer(s) to the new poles. Seattle City Light is working closely to expedite this process. We will continue to monitor and coordinate these efforts as needed to facilitate the removal of old poles.
  • Scheduled power outages are required to do the work safely. Affected customers will receive a separate notice with the date, time and duration of the outage.
  • Planned power outages are important to maintaining and upgrading our infrastructure. Planned outages are necessary to ensure that City Light crews can complete their work in a safe, efficient manner. We understand that outages can be burdensome, and even more so as our customers are at home working, teaching children, and maintaining a healthy life during the COVID-19 crisis.

  • Construction Start: As early as April 12, 2021
  • Duration: 6 weeks
  • Daily Work Hours: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with some night work
