Project Description

Seattle City Light plans to upgrade the underdeck high pressure sodium (HPS) light fixtures at the State Route 99 overpass on South Cloverdale Street. Existing lights will be replaced with new light emitting diode (LED) fixtures.

Location

The lights are located within the State Route 99 overpass on South Cloverdale Street, between 7th and 8th avenues south.

What's Happening Now?

Project Update (Dec. 2020): Crews completed the final commissioning work in late Dec. 2020. This project has been completed.

Community Benefits

  • The new lights will increase visibility, improve pedestrian and traffic safety.
  • The installations will lower operations and maintenance costs for Seattle City Light.
  • LEDs also reduce greenhouse gas emissions during manufacturing as well as when they are in use. Additionally, about 20,000 tons of reduced carbon emissions per year are the result of fewer service vehicle trips.

Anticipated Impacts

  • Crews will replace the existing lights with new LED fixtures that focus on sidewalk and roadway lighting. The color temperature for the new lights will be at 3000 Kelvin (K), which emits a warm white color.
  • Maintenance outages may be required to do the work safely. Customers will be notified in advance of any outage.
  • Customers can expect temporary parking, sidewalk and lane restrictions in the immediate work area during construction hours. Traffic control flaggers will be used to maintain traffic and pedestrian safety through the work areas.
  • Noise is expected from construction and heavy equipment.

  • Construction Start: Late August 2020
  • Duration: Two to three months
  • Daily Work Schedule: Mon.–Fri., 9:00 am–3:00 pm (with some weekends)
