This site is a work in progress. Thanks for your patience.

The Seattle Black Heritage Project aims to research, document and preserve sites and stories significant to Seattle's Black community. The project is community driven and will consolidate existing research into interactive maps before transitioning into an outreach phase where community will be encouraged to add to the record with their story and eventually choose a specific preservation project to be undertaken by the City’s historic preservation program. This work will include a concurrent storytelling effort focused on illuminating the histories of select Black churches. The project will directly address impacts of displacement and gentrification by focusing on community voices and ensuring that Seattle Black heritage is documented and equitably recorded.  It will be led by equity and shaped at all levels by community.
