Children's Programs

Preschool children are especially vulnerable to fire and burn injuries. In addition, children under the age of five are at serious risk of being killed in a fire.

Request fire and life safety programs for your preschool or daycare to address the safety needs of your children. Program materials are directed towards children ages three to five years.

This program utilizes the award-winning Play Safe! Be Safe! Kit to teach four important lessons:

  • Firefighters are our friends

  • Crawl low under smoke
  • Keep away from matches and lighters

The Play Safe! Be Safe! Kit is mailed free of charge to teachers working at preschools and daycares in the City of Seattle. Each kit contains a 20-minute video, activity boards, card game and teacher’s manual.

  • All preschool groups are required to complete the Play Safe! Be Safe! education kit prior to a firefighter visit or fire station tour.
  • Children must be ages 3-5 years to participate.
  • To obtain a free kit, fill out the request section of the online registration form and a kit will be mailed to the mailing address entered on the form. Only preschool groups in Seattle may request a free kit.

The Smart Kids! Safe Kids! Injury Prevention Program was developed by Seattle Fire Department and King County Emergency Medical Services to address the main injury categories relevant to children, ages 3-5 years. Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death for young children.

The Smart Kids! Safe Kids! Injury Prevention Curriculum targets four of the main categories relevant to children three to five years old. Topics include:

  • Burn and scald prevention
  • Poisoning prevention
  • Head injury prevention through wearing a helmet
  • Pedestrian safety

Each unit is designed to teach children a concrete safety skill that can be used to stay safe and to avoid unnecessary injuries. The curriculum includes an instructor's guide, hands-on activities, story cards, lesson plans and classroom ideas for teachers to use when teaching these important skills to preschoolers.

To obtain a free kit, fill out the request section of the online registration form and a kit will be mailed to the mailing address entered on the form. Only preschool groups in Seattle may request a free kit.
