How the Plan Was Developed
From 2021 to 2023, City of Seattle's Food Action Plan Interdepartment Team (IDT) led a process to update the Plan for the first time since 2012. The IDT's efforts included literature reviews, racial equity analyses, workshops with other government agencies, and extensive community engagement. After two years in the making, the updated Food Action Plan is here!
The updated Plan continues the City’s focus on increasing food security and access, supporting the local food economy, preventing food waste, and equitable outcomes. New content, priorities, and approaches include:
- Food System Resilience: Actions to responding to a variety of interrelated food system challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.
- Plan Stewardship: Actions that will enhance efforts to monitor and report on Food Action Plan progress.
- Guiding Food Justice Values: Principles developed by Seattle’s Environmental Justice Committee to help guide the Plan's development and implementation.

Community Engagement
On behalf of the City's Food Action Plan Team, thank you to the more than 250 community leaders and representatives from community-based organizations, coalitions, businesses, and institutions who provided expertise and input to help develop the Food Action Plan Update.
