July 14, 2021 Update

SPU's chlorine supply situation has returned to normal. We continue to receive regular shipments of chlorine products, and the electrical problem at the manufacturing plant has been resolved.

Seattle's regional drinking water remains safe to use and drink, and our water supply is good through the summer.

June 23, 2021 Update

SPU continues to carefully monitor the chlorine supply situation. Earlier this week, we received our scheduled shipment of chlorine products. We were also informed that the electrical problem at the manufacturing plant has been fixed. Please continue to check this website for more updates as the manufacturer and our supplier work to return chlorine supply and deliveries to normal.

As noted below in the June 18 update, Seattle's regional drinking water remains safe to use and drink, and our water supply is good through the summer.

At this time, we are not asking Seattle customers to take any special action. But, as always, we encourage you to use water wisely. For information about ways to save water, visit www.savingwater.org

June 18, 2021 Update

Earlier this week, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) and its partners including the City of Tacoma, the City of Everett, and the Department of Health (DOH), were made aware of a situation impacting the supply of chlorine products used to treat drinking water.

A major manufacturer of these products had to temporarily stop production at their plant due to an electrical problem. The problem is being fixed and the plant is expected to be back online by the end of this month.

What is SPU doing?

SPU continues to carefully monitor the situation, and we are working closely with our chlorine suppliers to schedule deliveries over the next few weeks. We are also working on back-up plans, including operational changes in the event the chlorine supply shortage continues.

What should customers do?

Seattle's regional drinking water remains safe to use and drink, and our water supply is good through the summer.
