Asbestos in Construction and Demolition

Federal, state, and local regulations require that all asbestos and other hazardous materials be removed prior to demolition.

Asbestos Survey

Prior to performing any renovation or demolition work, an asbestos survey must be performed to determine whether there are asbestos containing materials in the work area or structure. See Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA) Asbestos Survey Guidance.

Notification of Demolition

For demolitions greater than 120 square feet, you must notify PSCAA through form.

Asbestos-containing Waste

It is illegal to put any hazardous material in the garbage or recycling (SMC21.36.025 Unlawful Disposal). See the PSCAA list of authorized asbestos disposal facilities or the Dept. of Labor and Industries (L&I) list of certified asbestos abatement contractors
