Daejeon, South Korea

Sister City since 1989

Seattle Mayor Charles Royer led a delegation to Daejeon in October 1989 for the official signing of the sister city agreement. Members of the delegation included several Seattle business and community leaders. The relationship has included cultural and educational exchanges, public employees training, and promotion of trade between the two cities. Daejeon Park located on Beacon Hill celebrates this strong friendship.

Daejeon ("Great Field" in the Korean language) is the Republic of Korea's sixth largest city with a population of 1.5 million. It is located in central Korea about 100 miles south of Seoul and is an important administrative, transportation, education, science, industrial center. Chungnam National University, one of the eight universities located in Daejeon, is one of the most prestigious in Korea and home to the nation's top medical schools.
