Nickels and SCL Score Big for Conservation
In a major event at Qwest Field, Mayor Greg Nickels and Superintendent Jorge Carrasco launched a new energy savings action plan that will double Seattle City Light's current conservation program over the next five years. The $185 million investment in dozens of efficiency programs will save customers more than $310 million in their residential and business bills over five years and create more than 1,000 green jobs. The increased investment, seven times the national average, puts City Light in the forefront nationwide, and by avoiding the need for new energy sources ensures that Seattle's electricity rates will remain among the lowest in the nation. "We're putting our conservation program on steroids," the Mayor said.

"Green" Home for Woodland Park Penguins Saves Energy and Water
Thanks to a $65,000 grant from Seattle City Light, Woodland Park's Humboldt penguins will soon have a state-of-the-art home that saves energy and water. The City Light grant helps offset the cost of installing an innovative geothermal system to keep water temperature at a comfy level for the penguins. Projected savings over conventional systems: 22,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year and 430,000 kilowatts during the life span of the system - enough to power 43 homes for a year and take 57 cars off the road per year. Mayor Greg Nickels led a ground-breaking ceremony at the zoo in July. The new exhibit is expected to open in May 2009. Watch the video.
