Renewable Energy Credits

As a City Light customer, you are already receiving about 90% carbon-free electricity. We also track and offset any remaining carbon from our fuel mix and operations, meaning City Light and the electricity you use every day have a net-zero impact. The Pacific Northwest region, however, continues to rely on fossil fuels for much of its energy and our Green Up program gives you the opportunity to support the growth of renewable energy in our region and right here in our community.

Green Up is a voluntary renewable energy program that allows you to support wind, solar and other renewable energy projects generating carbon-free energy in our region. When you enroll in Green Up, we purchase regional renewable energy credits (RECs) on your behalf and fund local rooftop solar projects hosted by not-for-profits and public organizations like affordable housing, schools, and parks.

Why Join Green Up?

  • It's a low-cost way to support clean energy: You choose your support level at either a set monthly dollar amount as low as $1 or at a match level of your choosing, based on your electricity use.
  • It's a green thing you can do to help protect the environment: By supporting this program, you are adding clean, renewable energy to the regional and local power grid
  • It's innovative and equitable: Green Up is increasing access to clean energy and green jobs, improving the health and economy of our local communities and the region

How Does Green Up Work?

  • You buy renewable energy credits through Green Up and the cost is added to your regular City Light bill.
  • City Light purchases Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) on your behalf: one renewable energy credit for every 1,000 kWh of electricity they produce.
  • You can cancel at any time. There are no long-term commitments or additional fees.
  • Green Up charges will show up on your electricity bill, either at a match level of your choosing or a set monthly dollar amount.
  • Green Up purchases are not tax-deductible. Since it is a purchase, it is not considered a charitable donation.

Two Ways to Participate

Green Up Block

You don't have to spend a lot of money to contribute to a clean energy future for our region. For as little as $1 a month you can participate in Green Up Block, and you'll contribute the same amount on every bill. This option offers consistency to customers whose usage and/or budget may fluctuate throughout the year. There is no limit to the "block" amount you'd like to contribute. The more you purchase, the more renewable energy you support.

Sign up for Green Up Blocks and choose your monthly contribution.

Green Up Match

Green Up Match is one of the easiest ways to contribute to a clean energy future for our region. You can choose to match a percentage of your monthly electricity use—up to 100%. A match up to 100% means you contribute $0.01 per kWh you use. The average City Light home uses about 600 kWh of electricity each month, so a 100% Green Up Match of the average home would equal a $6 monthly commitment or $12 on a bi-monthly bill.
