NE 70th St and I-5 Crossing Improvements

Updated: September 6, 2019

 This project is complete!

The NE 70th St and I-5 Crossing Improvement Project is now complete. New crosswalks and stop signs at 6th Ave NE and 8th Ave NE along NE 70th St are complete and open for use. Crossing improvements to make a new protected bike lane and a pedestrian walkway over the I-5 overpass on NE 70th St are also open. Crews will return in the next few months to add pedestrian symbols to the new pedestrian lane on the overpass.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation while we constructed this project. This project would not have been possible without the community's help and guidance. We hope you enjoy these new safety enhancements for people walking and biking.

Project Overview

Crossing improvements for people walking, biking, and driving are coming to NE 70th St between 6th Ave NE and 12th Ave NE. Improvements between 6th Ave NE and 8th Ave NE were requested by the community as part of the City's Neighborhood Street Fund (NSF). These improvements include new all-way stops at the intersections of NE 70th St at 8th Ave NE and 6th Ave NE, new crosswalks, a walkway, and protected bike lanes in both directions. We're also adding a protected bike lane on the south side of NE 70th St between 8th Ave NE and 12th Ave NE, and adding a neighborhood greenway connection on NE 70th between 12th Ave NE and 15th Ave NE. To facilitate the new bike lanes, parking will be consolidated to the south side of NE 70th St between 8th Ave NE and Roosevelt Way NE and removed between Roosevelt Way NE and 12th Ave NE on both sides of the street. Driveway access will be maintained.

Elements

  • New all-way stops at the intersections of NE 70th St at 8th Ave NE and 6th Ave NE
  • New curb bulbs and ramps at 6th Ave NE and 8th Ave NE
  • A painted walkway on the north side of the I-5 overpass
  • Protected bike lanes in both directions between 6th Ave NE and 8th Ave NE
  • Protected bike lane (eastbound) between 8th Ave NE and 12th Ave NE
  • Neighborhood greenway connection, including speed humps and new stop signs between 12th Ave NE and 15th Ave NE
  • New street lights on the southwest corner of NE 71st St and 6th Ave NE and the northeast corner of NE 70th St and 8th Ave NE

Benefits

  • Adds predictability for all travelers as they move through the NE 70th St and 8th Ave NE intersection
  • Enhances safety for people walking and biking
  • Provides a continuous sidewalk network on the north side of the street
  • Provides east/est bike connections from Green Lake to 15th Ave NE
