Taxi Fares: More Information about How They Work in Seattle
Traditionally, all taxis in Seattle have been required to apply the same rate for all trips using a simple taximeter.
Since 2023, Seattle has allowed taxis to use smart taximeters, which allow flexibility to set rates in different ways. Taxis can now use surge pricing like transportation network companies use. They can set flat rates or charge an up-front fare between two points, they can charge contract rates, and they can charge fees for items such as tolls, payments made by credit card, and extra passengers.
All rate changes must be set by the dispatch agency and programmed by the dispatch agency into the smart taximeter; taxi drivers cannot change the rate on their own. Rates must be posted outside both rear passenger doors and on the window of the rear driver side door. The sign must include the statement “Rates and fares may vary. Confirm the rate or fare before you accept the ride.”
Seattle further requires each taxi to have a working taximeter in the vehicle, to position the taximeter so that it is visible to a passenger, to test all taximeters once per year for accuracy and to provide the passenger with a paper or electronic receipt following completion of the trip. The receipt provided must contain the following information:
- The date and time the trip began and ended,
- Distance traveled,
- The medallion number for the vehicle providing the trip,
- The driver's regional for-hire driver's license number or unique driver identification number,
- Fare charged and any tip paid,
- Any additional charges paid (e.g., additional passenger charge, tolls, temporary fuel surcharge, technology fee, convenience fee, etc.),
- Total amount paid,
- The dispatch agency with which the vehicle is affiliated, and
- A phone number, email address, or website to submit passenger feedback and inquiries to the dispatch agency.
If you did not receive a receipt for your trip, have a question about your trip’s fare, or need additional assistance, then please contact Consumer Protection at the phone number or email address listed to the right or file a complaint.
