Laurelhurst Community Center

This community center is temporarily closing Sept. 1, 2023 through summer 2024 for an ADA Renovation Project

Laurelhurst Community Center is located at the top of a steep hill in the midst of the Laurelhurst residential neighborhood, offering great views of Lake Washington and in close proximity to Children's Hospital, University Village, Magnuson Park and the University of Washington. The setting is the beautiful Laurelhurst Park, which includes a large play area, baseball fields, soccer fields, tennis courts and walking path around the park.

The original "fieldhouse" was competed in 1935. A 2006 renovation includes a 4,150-square-foot addition on the west side of the building featuring a modern interior with vaulted ceilings, lots of exterior windows and natural wood. The lobby includes the front desk, piano and sitting area. Off of the lobby is Fireside Room with plenty of seating and an adjacent commercial quality kitchen, large exterior window and a cozy fireplace. The multipurpose room faces west with a peek-a-boo view of Lake Washington and the University of Washington. Downstairs are restrooms, a quaint pottery room and kiln room.

Laurelhurst Community Center ADA Barrier Removal Project

Community Center Closed in September 2023

This construction project will be combined with work at Montlake Community Center. We anticipate opening in summer 2024. Please watch this website for upcoming parking lot impacts.

The Laurelhurst Community Center Play Area will be closed starting February 12, 2024 as we work to improve access at the south and east entrances. This work is being done as part of the Community CenterADA Barrier Removal Project, which is making great progress. We
anticipate the play area opening up by the spring and the community center by the summer of 2024.

Budget

Real Estate Excise Tax provides for an estimated construction cost of $1.7M.

Schedule

Design: January 2020 - February 2023
Bidding: April - June 2023
Construction: November 2023 - Summer 2024

Project Description

This project corrects approximately 200 documented barriers to accessibility on the Seattle Barrier Removal Schedule. The project includes:
  •  Accessible parking stalls at the south and east entrance
  •  Accessible pathways, ramp, and entrance from parking area to the community center south and east entrances and to the playground.
  •  Miscellaneous interior improvements to remove barriers to accessibility (and the ADA) at toilet rooms, multi-purpose room, kitchen, classrooms, exercise room, etc.

Lawn and planting areas that are disturbed during construction will be restored once construction is completed.

Anticipated Site Impacts:
The Community Center, play area, playfield and parking lot will close to the public during construction. Restroom closures will be mitigated by providing portable toilets as needed.
