Project Description

Seattle City Light will be replacing the aging underground infrastructure for eight (8) existing historic three-globe streetlight poles, and adding three (3) new streetlight poles and four (4) tree pits, along 2nd Avenue Extension South between South Washington Street and South Main Street.

This project is a part of Seattle City Light’s effort to improve customer safety, reduce carbon emissions and conserve resources by converting globe streetlights in the downtown Seattle core from high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights to energy-efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

What's Happening Now?

Project Update (February 2024): Work on this project will start in March 2024.

Community Benefits

  • Replacing the aging underground electrical infrastructure will increase reliability.
  • New LED lights will improve light quality, pedestrian and traffic safety, and maintain the character of the Pioneer Square Historic District.

Anticipated Impacts

  • Customers can expect parking, sidewalk, and traffic impacts within the work zone. Construction signs and traffic control flaggers will redirect pedestrians and vehicles where needed.
  • Crews will maintain access for businesses. All trenches will be steel plated outside of construction working hours.
  • Crews will restore and repave all affected areas under SDOT restoration guidelines.
  • Power outages are not expected during this project. If outages are required, customers will be notified beforehand.
  • Some noise is expected during construction.

Construction Start: March 2024
Duration: Approximately six (6) months
Daily Work Schedule: Monday - Friday: 7 a.m. - 4 p.m.
