Over-legal Trucks Conditions of Use

The following operational requirements shall be satisfied before permits or validation numbers can be issued for movement on streets within the City of Seattle. These are minimum requirements. Certain circumstances and locations may dictate more stringent requirements than those listed here:

  • The permit required by City of Seattle is in addition to any state required permit.
  • The City of Seattle’s permit shall remain in the vehicle at all times and be available for inspection by enforcement officers or City of Seattle employees responsible for managing City of Seattle streets.
  • Permits are vehicle-specific.

Over-width [over 8’ 6”]

  • On two-lane roads when a vehicle or load extends beyond the center line or center of roadway, front and rear pilot cars shall be required.
  • On multiple-lane roads the following is required:
    • 12’ 0” through 13’ 11” wide: 1 pilot car, rear
    • 14’ 0” through 15’ 5” wide: 2 pilot cars, one front and one rear
    • 15’ 6” wide or over: City of Seattle Commercial Vehicle Enforcement escort required
    • All building moves: City of Seattle Commercial Vehicle Enforcement escort required
    • Eaves on buildings and mobile homes shall be included in over-width dimensions.

Over-height [over 14’ 0”]

  • 14’1” through 14’11” high: 1 pilot car, front
  • 15’ 0” through 15’ 5+” high: 2 pilot cars, one front and one rear
  • 15’ 6” high or over: City of Seattle Commercial Vehicle Enforcement escort required

Over-length [over 75’ 0” for combinations or over 40’ 0” for single units]

  • 81’ 0” through 89’ 11” long: 1 pilot car, rear
  • 90’ 0” through 99’ 11” long: 2 pilot cars, one front and one rear
  • 100’ 0” long or over: City of Seattle Commercial Vehicle Enforcement escort and a steering trailer required. Except by special permission from a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer, a steering trailer shall have a driver, and shall be equipped to allow two-way communication between the driver of the tractor and the driver of the steering trailer.

Overhang

  • 15’ 0” or more of overhang from the front of the vehicle: 1 pilot car, front
  • 15’ 0” or more of overhang from the center of the rear axle: 1 pilot car, rear
  • Overhang shall not exceed 1/3 of the overall length

Movement prohibited
There shall be no movement of any over-legal load between the following hours:

  • 6:00 AM until 9:00 AM, Monday through Friday
  • 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Monday through Friday

Indemnification: The permit holder agrees to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless the City of Seattle, its officials, officers, employees, and agents against: (1) any liability, claims, causes of action, judgments, or expenses, including reasonable attorney fees, resulting directly or indirectly from any act or omission of any permit holder, anyone directly or indirectly employed by them, and anyone for whose acts or omissions they may be liable, arising out of the permit holder's use of the public right-of-way; and (2) all loss by the failure of the permit holder to fully or adequately perform, in any respect, all authorizations or obligations under the Permit.
