Northgate Station
Review Status
We have reviewed Northgate Station seven times. In March 2014, we approved the design development for the station provided that Sound Transit return for a review of the proposed parking garage adjacent to the station's north entry plaza. We conducted that review on October 2, 2014, and approved the concept design for the garage.
Project Description
The elevated Northgate Station will be located east of 1st Ave NE and span NE 103rd Street. Station entrances will be on the Northgate Mall property north of NE 103rd Street and near the Northgate Transit Center south of NE 103rd Street. A partially below-grade garage at the southwest corner of the adjacent Northgate Mall property would replace the parking capacity at the King County Transit Center that would be displaced by future transit-oriented development .
Sound Transit’s elevator Northgate Light Rail Station is the northernmost station of Northgate Link, a 4.3-mile extension of light rail from the University of Washington. The Northgate Station will be the northern end of the light rail until it is extended further north. This station, scheduled to open in 2021, will provide a 14-minute ride to downtown and will serve Northgate Mall, bus transfers at the transit center, adjacent park-and-ride facilities, North Seattle College, and nearby homes and businesses.
Construction of the tunnel portal and tunneling to Roosevelt Station is underway. Construction of the station and elevated tracks will begin in 2016. The tunneling contract is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
