Garbage Collection Resumes Today, Except in South Seattle

Normal Garbage, Yard Waste, Recycling Collections Planned for Monday’s MLK Holiday

SEATTLE — Solid waste collection in Seattle, postponed Thursday and Friday due to snow and icy conditions, partially resumes today.

Garbage, yard waste and recycling collections missed yesterday (Friday, Jan. 12) in Seattle north of the Lake Washington Ship Canal will be picked up today. This week’s collection for all Seattle apartments and businesses is expected to also be picked up by the end of today.

However, icy road conditions have again prevented residential collections from taking place today in south Seattle (south of the ship canal).

Residential customers missed on Thursday, Jan. 11 and Friday, Jan. 12 will have all their materials — garbage, recycling, and yard waste — collected next Thursday and Friday (Jan. 18 and 19).

Monday customers will have their materials collected on schedule on the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, Monday, Jan. 15. Customers are reminded to have their containers available by 7am to ensure collection.

Seattle residents are reminded that Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007 is the last day on which they may drop off their holiday trees and greens for free at SPU’s North and South Recycling and Disposal stations. Tree sections must be cut to eight feet or less in length and the trunk must be four inches or smaller in diameter. The limit is three trees per vehicle.

The City of Seattle’s North Recycling and Disposal Station, in the Fremont/Wallingford area, and the South Recycling and Disposal Station, in the South Park area, will be open on the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday (Monday, Jan. 15), during the stations’ regular business hours — 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Both stations are normally open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Customers can report a missed garbage, yard waste or recycling collection after 6 PM on the day it was missed by calling (206) 684-3000 or by visiting the On-line Missed Collection form available on SPU’s web site.

In addition to providing more than 1.3 million customers in the Seattle metropolitan area with a reliable water supply, SPU provides essential sewer, drainage, solid waste and engineering services that safeguard public health, maintain the City’s infrastructure and protect, conserve and enhance the region's environmental resources.
