The Cedar River Watershed HCP includes actions to protect and restore the habitats of 83 species of fish and wildlife that live in the Cedar River Watershed. Of those 83 species, the City has identified two sub-groups of species that are most at risk to decline in population or extinction.
The Species of Greatest Concern are those species for which current population status indicates that immediate measures need to be taken in order to halt or reverse serious regional population decline. This list of 14 includes all species currently listed under the Federal Endangered Species Act as threatened or endangered, some state-listed species, and unlisted species considered at high risk in the region by experts.
Other Species of Concern are those species for which current population status indicates that there is some decline or a potential risk of future decline, and the potential that the species could be listed at some time in the future. Most of this group of 69 species are declining or at risk of declining in population numbers because their key habitats are regionally declining, although many are currently believed to be relatively stable in the Cedar River Watershed.
