Summary of Thursday, March 9, 2006 Open House held at the Ballard Public Library:

Over 40 trail enthusiasts joined us to learn about improvements planned for the Burke-Gilman Trail at the intersection of Seaview Ave NW and Seaview Place NW - the trail head at the entrance to the Golden Gardens Park. Two design options were shown for the upcoming intersection construction along with preliminary design plans for the section from NW 60th Street to Golden Gardens.

Some of the comments from the meeting attendees provided us with suggestions for the park entrance and its usage. In response to these comments, SDOT will install a bike rack at the end of the new path way and include additional signage for pedestrians and bicyclists. Some of the other suggestions are being passed along for consideration by the Parks Department as the department is reevaluating the configuration of the parking lots adjacent to the park's entrance. We will also keep in mind other traffic-related suggestions as we monitor the intersection after the construction is completed; we will make revisions if we determine they are warranted.

As a result of the meeting, we have selected the design option with minimal impacts for the intersection of Seaview Ave NW and Seaview Place NW and which accommodates the needs of both the Parks Department and SDOT.

Background about the intersection construction:

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and the Seattle Parks Department are working together on the next improvement for extending the Burke Gilman Trail at the intersection of Seaview Ave NW and Seaview Place NW just adjacent to the entrance of Golden Gardens Park.

The goal of this project is to construct a trail head that will allow users of the future trail to access the waterfront in a safer manner. We will accomplish these goals by improving the crossing of Seaview Ave Place NW with the addition of a marked cross walk, wheel chair curb ramps, and a designated pathway to the waterfront. Additional improvements to the parking lots and landscape will be coordinated with Parks. Eventually, we will add a monument commemorating/marking the trail head of the Burke-Gilman Trail at the Golden Gardens intersection.

Funding for the construction at Seaview Ave NW and Seaview Pl NW intersection comes from the Pro Parks Fund.

Project Elements:

  • Addition of a curb bulb and improve the east and westbound pedestrian crossing on Seaview Ave NW with a new crosswalk

  • Addition of sidewalks and wheelchair curb ramps that accommodate ADA requirements

  • Addition of a controlled stop for the right turn going up Seaview Place NW

Construction Schedule:
Weather permitting, construction will start after mid-March and is estimated to end in late May.

Construction Impacts:
Minimal - Golden Gardens Park will still be accessible to all traffic south and north of the intersection during construction.

More information on this section will be posted when available.
