Northgate 5th Avenue NE Improvements
Phase 1

Revised: April 18, 2007

About the Project

Transforming Fifth Avenue NE, Fifth Avenue NE, into a safe, pedestrian-friendly street that accommodates all types of transportation, is part of the grand vision for revitalizing Northgate. SDOT completed construction along this street in fall 2006. Improvements include:

  • A pedestrian promenade with improved crosswalks connecting the library and community center with Northgate Mall and bus stops.
  • Landscaped street medians.
  • Wider sidewalks with trees, curb, gutter and driveway improvements.
  • Traffic signal and street lighting improvements and the addition of 25 new lighting fixtures.
  • Art installation including glass inserts in the sidewalk near the library, three bird house sculptures and one human perch (bench).

Project cost is $2.1 million and would not have been possible without contributions from City Parks and Recreation, Libraries, Public Utilities, King County Metro Transit and private donors.
