Filipino Advisory Council

About the Council

The Filipino Advisory Council to the Seattle Police Department (SPD) was created in 1994, and is one of ten councils that work collaboratively with the police. The Council was created to work with the Department on issues of concern, and to share insights and recommendations that could impact relationships between the SPD and the community. Council members work together to create their own agendas, and strategize ways for making police services more responsive to the needs of the community.

Our Areas of Focus

  • Advise the SPD about the crime prevention, public safety, and law enforcement concerns of the Filipino American community through open and respectful dialogue.
  • Promote and encourage officer training with regard to cultural competency while expanding the community's understanding of the practices and policies of the police department.
  • Support and encourage Filipino American youth and the SPD to develop a healthy and successful relationship.
  • Promote and encourage community participation in the Advisory Council, events and workshops that promote public safety.
  • Foster goodwill and trust between the Filipino American community and the SPD (Delete: Seattle Police Department).
  • Encourage police recruitment in the Filipino American community.

Bio + -

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. I moved to Seattle in 2017 when I joined the SPD. Before that, I was working as an EMT in Los Angeles County and also working as a professional Scouter for the Boy Scouts of America. I was also a soldier in the US Army for 7 years as a Reservist. My father is Filipino, his great-grandparents immigrated from the Philippines to work the sugar cane fields of Hawaii. My mother is Mexican and Native-American. I was heavily involved in community service my entire life through the Boy Scouts. This and an unhealthy fascination with superhero comics and cartoons made law enforcement feel like a natural choice for me. I wanted a job that allowed me to serve the community while also doing something unique and exciting. I never planned be a Seattle Police Officer. But after a random trip I took to this city, I was drawn to it. It had an atmosphere that intrigued me enough to make me apply and uproot my life in LA. Today I am a patrol officer in the South Precinct. My beat is R3, which is the district that houses the Filipino Community Center. I have been serving the people and community of South Seattle for 8 years. I was introduced to the community center by my partner at the time, Officer Cruz, who was a member of the community prior to becoming an officer. After that, I became more and more involved in the community meetings and events which were outside of my assigned patrol duties. Through the community center, I learned more about Filipino history and culture that I was never aware of. Because of them, I now feel closer to my Filipino heritage than ever before. It truly has been my privilege to be included as a part of this community. Other than patrol and my role as a community liaison, I serve the department in a number of auxiliary roles and units. -EMT Unit: I am a certified emergency medical technician. I use my training and skills to provide emergency medicine on the street if and when the scene is not yet safe for the fire department to respond. We also staff large events as supplemental aid for similar situations. -Training Unit: I regularly work as an assistant instructor for our classes of new recruits before they hit the streets. Specifically medical and defensive tactics. -FTO: I am a field training officer. After new officers complete all their training, they are assigned to a field trainer to respond to 911 calls with. I assess and train them on the job to ensure they serve the community effectively and safely. This is the last phase of new officer training. -Honor Guard: As a member, I fulfil ceremonial duties and military-style honors at memorial services and special events. -Peer Support Team: As a certified peer counselor and member of our team, I am available to provide emotional and tangible support through times of personal or professional crisis for other first responders.
