DOCENT PROGRAM 2010
It's that time of year - time to start thinking about becoming a volunteer
naturalist in 2010! Discovery Park's Docent Program is the perfect way
to learn about local natural history while giving back to the community.
Docent come from varied backgrounds, but each docent shares a love for
teaching about nature. No experience is necessary - we provide all the
training you need in order to get started as a docent.
Docents participate in two 6-week training sessions (beginning in February
and August) that include hands-on activities, natural history lessons,
and field training that will prepare each docent to lead educational
programs for the public. In return for this extensive training, docents
are asked to commit to leading 12 programs over the course of the following
year.
Docent responsibilities are unique and may include helping a child
catch her first tadpole or teaching the public about the important role
spiders play in the world. Docents are responsible for facilitating
discoveries about nature for children of all ages! They do this by teaching
school programs, leading interpretive programs on the weekends, and
staffing educational Discovery Stations in the busier areas of the park.
