New Member Sought for the Seattle Commission for Sexual Minorities

Seattle- Mayor Greg Nickels is seeking candidates for one position on the Seattle Commission for Sexual Minorities. This member will be appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council to serve the remainder of an unexpired two-year term. Members serve without compensation and must reside in Seattle.

The commission advises the mayor, council and departments about sexual minority issues; recommends policies and legislation; brings together the sexual minority communities and the larger Seattle community through long-range projects; and ensures city departments address sexual minority concerns fairly and equitably, both on an individual basis and as a protected class.

The commission is particularly interested in applicants with backgrounds in education, health, media, law, public policy and finance. Applicants of color are encouraged to apply. The deadline for applying is Nov. 25, 2005.

Participation in the commission requires a minimum time commitment of 10-15 hours per month. This includes attendance at evening monthly meetings held the third Thursday of each month, participation in committee work, various meetings with city departments, lobbying the state legislature, recruiting other members, and addressing issues of the LGBT community. The commission has three committees: community relations; media and marketing; and recruitment, administration and government.
