Olympic Day is a worldwide commemoration of the 1894 founding of the modern Olympic Games. On June 23, 1894, Baron Pierre de Coubertin convened the first meeting of the International Olympic Committee at the Sorbonne in Paris. National Olympic committees throughout the world participate in the international celebration, with each Olympic committee sending Olympic Day greetings to participating nations. At the urging of Chicago Mayor Richard Daley during the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting in January, Nickels joined fellow mayors from across the country in a collective pledge of support for hosting the Olympic Games in Chicago in 2016.
