Mayor's statement on Seattle Children's proposal
Department of Planning and Development to appeal recommendation to City Council
SEATTLE - Mayor Greg Nickels today issued this statement regarding the Hearing Examiner's recommendation against the proposed expansion of Seattle Children's hospital. The master plan will now be reviewed by the City Council.
"We are tremendously fortunate to have a valued institution such as Seattle Children's providing quality health care for our young people. I am disappointed with the Hearing Examiner's recommendation to deny Seattle Children's expansion plans and I've instructed the Department of Planning and Development to appeal the recommendation to the City Council. Working with a Citizen's Advisory Committee and the city's Department of Planning and Development, Seattle Children's has gone through an extensive process for community input, addressing neighborhood concerns about transportation and reducing the height of the proposed buildings. Children across the Northwest, many of them who are now adults, have benefited from the dedication, innovation and compassion shown by the staff at Seattle Children's and we are committed to helping this institution meet the needs of our region."
