Clean & Green Seattle - Gas Works Park Earth Day
On Saturday, April 18, 2009, Mayor Greg Nickels led more than ninety-five (95) volunteers as they picked up litter in and along Wallingford’s section of the Burke Gilman Trail. Sustainable Wallingford, Omega Delta Phi, Fraternity, Pan Pacific Hotel, Studio Evolve Pilates & Bodywork and the Green Apple Festivals participated. More than 90 bags of litter were collected equaling more than 5,000 lbs of litter. Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent Tim Gallagher also led volunteers.
Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle Parks and Recreation, the Department of Corrections Seattle Public Utilities also assisted in the effort. Seattle Channel covered the event. SPU’s Laura Kelly provided intern Allison Thomas for the “plastic bag monster” costume.
- Repaired 37 potholes using 1.5 ton of asphalt on Northlake and surrounding streets.
- Used 10 tons of asphalt grindings to gravel patch shoulders and alleys
- Cut back 54 square yards of vegetation
SDOT mowed 3 swath miles
- 5,640 lbs (nearly 3 tons) of litter collected
