Welcome to Seattle City Light's Skagit River Hydroelectric Project! Surround yourself with the natural beauty of the North Cascades. Cruise Diablo Lake for stunning views of glaciers and cascading waterfalls. There are many things to see and do whether you visit for a day or longer.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer reporter/photographer Jeff Larsen spent two days at the Skagit Hydroelectric Project sampling the scenery, sights, and splendor of the Skagit River and North Cascades National Park. Read his report, Short Trips: Slow Down and Enjoy the Power and Beauty of Newhalem.

Among the several self-guided walks at the Skagit Project is Ladder Creek Falls. Named "Best Secret Great Escape" by Northwest Backroads, a locally-produced program of Seattle's KING-TV, Ladder Creek offers a one-of-a-kind walk through waterfalls and exotic gardens. Named "Best Waterfall on the Loop" by the Cascade Loop Association, Ladder Creek is also recognized as one of the "Best places to kiss" in Washington state.
  • Diablo Dam Good Dinner Tour
    (Scenic alpine boat cruise plus dinner - 4 hours)

    Power, Romance, Adventure....and Chicken! Enjoy a fully escorted tour and boat cruise plus all-you-can eat hot, crispy-baked chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetarian spaghetti, vegetables, fruit gelatin salad, rolls and butter, beverage and home made pie ala mode.


    Adults: $55
    Seniors (age 62 and older): $50
    Teens (age 13 to 17): $45
    Youth (age 6 to 12): $40
    Child (under age 5): FREE
    NOTE: A fuel surcharge will be added for each adult or senior.

    Diablo Dam Good Dinner Tour is available Mondays and Thursdays in July and August. Tour departs at 12:30 p.m. (check-in by noon). Dinner is served at 3 p.m. in the Diablo Cookhouse.   • Diablo Lake Adventure (print flyer pdf, 1.5 Mb)

    If you've taken a Skagit Tour in the past, prepare yourself for a completely new experience. This beautiful two-and-a-half hour adventure tour explores Diablo Lake, a reservoir ringed by the snow-capped peaks of the North Cascades. Cruise the glacier-fed waters and high, narrow canyons of Diablo Lake on the 50-foot Alice Ross III. Bask in the splendor of the rugged wilderness from the upper observation deck. Learn about the natural history, geology, and ecology of this pristine environment. Catch a glimpse of the abundant wildlife that inhabit the shoreline. Your Diablo Lake adventure awaits!

    Seniors (age 62 and older): $20

    Diablo Lake Adventure is offered Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July through August. In June and September, tours are offered Saturday and Sunday only. Since 1918, Seattle City Light has operated the Skagit Power Project to deliver hydroelectric power to the City of Seattle. We're pleased to offer Skagit Tours and excited to share the North Cascades' many recreational opportunities.

Visit the Skagit General Store on the web and when you're in Newhalem (good food, local and historical information). The North Cascades Chamber of Commerce website has an events calendar and excellent information on local attractions. The North Cascades National Park web site has details on trails, camping, lodging, activities, facilities, fees and permits. Visit www.parks.wa.gov for Washington State Park campgrounds and other information. The North Cascades Institute offers environmental education for all ages. Due to heightened security, Seattle City Light has restricted access to certain areas of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project.

There is no public access to Ross and Diablo Powerhouses, the Incline Railway and Diablo Dam. Other seasonal attractions including the Gorge Powerhouse Visitors' Gallery and Ladder Creek Falls are open May through September. The Trail of the Cedars and the Gorge Dam Overlook Trail remain open year-round for public use.
