City Light
  2009 rate review

The Seattle City Council is currently evaluating Seattle City Light rates.

The Seattle City Council's Budget Committee voted 5-4 to support a 13.8 percent rate increase for Seattle City Light, starting Jan. 1, 2010. The council is scheduled to take a final vote Nov. 23.

Earlier, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels proposed an 8.8 percent rate increase for 2010. This proposal is an across-the-board increase, and assumes the same cost allocation and rate design from the utility's 2006 rate review.

If adopted, the new rates would preserve City Light's standing as one of the lowest-cost energy providers in region, as well as the low-cost provider when compared against other urban areas.

The Mayor and the City Council formed a Rates Advisory Committee to review a rate proposal. After meeting for eight consecutive weeks, the Committee issued a final report on Nov. 4, 2009. The majority report includes recommendations for a rate increase of 7-8 percent in 2010, further budget cuts at the utility, and adoption of a City Light strategic plan.
