Create Healthy Urban Environments

Create

Healthy Urban Environments

We will improve Seattle's quality of life, protect and restore the environment, and enhance neighborhood livability.

Goals

2004 Actions

  • Create and promote clean, green, livable urban neighborhoods
  • Protect and restore Seattle's urban forest
  • Protect and help restore lakes, rivers, creeks, and Puget Sound
  • "Green" the built environment (buildings, streets, etc.)
  • Help protect and improve local and regional air quality, and combat global warming
  • Integrate sustainable development practices into major infrastructure and neighborhood redevelopment efforts (e.g. South Lake Union, Central Waterfront/Center City, Northgate)
  • Launch a new Green Seattle Initiative (expand scope of Clean Seattle Initiative to include greening in 12 neighborhood clean-ups/year; other components under development)
  • Continue urban forest restoration projects; complete Urban Forest Management Plan
  • Acquire additional open space in the U-District, Denny Triangle, Pioneer Square, International District, Capitol Hill
  • Add two community gardens, focusing in underserved areas
  • Continue creek restoration and stewardship programs; complete Comprehensive Drainage Plan
  • Complete natural drainage project in Broadview neighborhood
  • Revise/strengthen comprehensive growth management plan and Environmentally Critical Areas Ordinance (ECAO)
  • Partner with Puget Sound Clean Air Agency on clean air initiatives (e.g. no idling) and regional global warming action plan

A key to a more sustainable Puget Sound region is to channel the increasing numbers of people, jobs, and households into already urbanized areas and away from rural areas, farms and forestlands, and other green spaces.  For this growth management strategy to succeed, we must keep our urban environments clean, attractive and livable.  The Healthy Urban Environments component of the Mayor’s Environmental Action Agenda works to: protect what’s left of Seattle’s natural systems, including the urban forest, creeks and watersheds, green spaces, and wildlife habitat; and look for opportunities to restore these natural systems as neighborhood plans are implemented, urban infrastructure is updated, buildings are erected or remodeled, and large areas of the city are redeveloped

"As we shore up our basic infrastructure and implement our neighborhood plans, we'll have great opportunities to try some new approaches to design and construction that are smarter, more efficient, more durable, and better for both our communities and the environment."  Mayor Greg Nickels
