Pike/Pine Conservation Overlay District

I recently sponsored a project in the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) to address concerns about the loss of neighborhood character in Pike/Pine neighborhood of Capitol Hill due to redevelopment. The Pike/Pine neighborhood is located between Interstate 5 and 15th Avenue East (see map). The study is based on the recommendations in the Pike/Pine Neighborhood Plan, and is intended to conserve neighborhood character by:

  • Promoting mixed-use development
  • Keeping new development compatible and in the scale of the neighborhood
  • Encouraging small, diverse local businesses
  • Saving older buildings of character
  • Retaining and attracting arts and cultural uses.

There will be draft legislation submitted to the Council for consideration soon. Please visit the website for additional information. Contact me if you have questions.

New HIV Prevention Campaign

As part of the City's 2008 budget I worked with my colleagues on the City Council to allocate $150,000 in additional funding for enhanced HIV prevention strategies. As a member of the Seattle King County Board of Health I receive frequent reports from the Health Department on the continuing occurrences of new HIV infections.

As part of these new efforts to reduce new infections, the Health Department recently implemented a new HIV testing promotion campaign. This strategy consists of a marketing campaign aimed at the group at highest risk for HIV: Men who have sex with men (MSM).
